On August 29, 2017, I had the chance to have a wonderful conversation with Dani, who takes several yoga classes at Sweetbay Yoga throughout the week. Dani grew up and has lived in the Washington DC area her whole life and has been practicing meditative yoga for about 35 to 40 years. She started practicing physical yoga about 15 years ago. Her interest in meditation and yoga comes from being introduced to the Hindu philosophy by a colleague at work, who also teaches yoga. Dani joined the Sweetbay community about 2 to 3 months ago. She noticed the new studio in her local shopping center and decided to give it a try. Dani says that she does not have one favorite pose in particular because she enjoys the balance of poses in the class. But when it comes to handstands and headstands, she says they're her least favorites! Through yoga, she hopes to increase her flexibility, strengthen muscles with her own weight, and work on her balance, while also mentally becoming aware of her center. Dani’s words of advice for someone hoping to start yoga:
find a skilled, trained teacher who has studied and integrated the spiritual and physical aspects into the practice.
